Overview
The 2030 Development Agenda is strongly dependent on water that connects and links most of the SDG’s. Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is critical to make this happen, as explicitly recognized through the SDG Target 6.5: “By 2030, implement IWRM at all levels”. This is an approach to ensure that water is managed inclusively across sectors and administrative levels. One of the most critical links is between the “water SDG 6” and the “ocean SDG 14”. With more than 80% of the world’s wastewater flowing untreated to the sea, and plastic production having increased twenty-fold over the last 50 years, the oceans are paying the price for our unstainable freshwater management practices: virtually no marine area is unaffected by anthropogenic activities, and dead zones in coastal areas have spread exponentially since the 1960’s. This presentation argues that the way forward is to ensure holistic, integrated and inclusive management by linking a source-to-sea approach with IWRM, moving towards joint and coordinated implementation of the water and ocean SDG’s.
